color class notes for 10/17

When using colors, you will use six numbers in a row or six letters in a row.  They will range in numbers from 0-9, and letters from a-f. Example:

00.00.00   or   ff.ff.ff

When starting out, computers only had 256 colors.  They limited by this by sticking to the numbers 0,3,6,9.  The colors were created by this organization system.

00.00.00

1)The first two numbers represented now much red was in the color.

2)The second two numbers was how much green was in the color.

3)The third set represented how much blue was in their.

Having 00 was the most amount of that color you can possibly have.  Having ff having the least amount of color you can possibly have.

Example   00.00.00 is black           ff.ff.ff is white.

Now that technology is getting better, you can look to a coloring chart and manipulate (or dither) the color by changing the numbers and letters to alter the hues.  Change a 3 to a 1 to make it a tad darker.  Change a 1 to a 3 to make it a tad lighter.

You can also use a shortcut when entering your font tag for color. Example

<font color=”#oo33cc”>  =  <font color=”#03c”>

a color chart is found here    www.lynda.com/hues.html    This will sort the colors by hues.

www.lynda.com/value.html  This will sort the colors from lightest to darkest.

There are 256 colors here that are considered “web-safe” colors.  There are of course other colors but these are the basic and more guarenteed to show up properly for professional cites.

Difference between “web-safe” colors and “web-smart” colors is web-safe colors stick to the numbers 0,3,6,9 such as #000333  Web-smart colors stick to double-digit numbers or letters such as #00.55.cc.  Unsafe colors break these rules such as #bdfff2.

Screen quality of the color is not necessarily what you’re looking for.  Let your colors reflect the emotions that you’re trying to portray and go easy on the eyes.  Sharp colors in contrast with each other will vibrate and can hurt one’s eyes.

Cool colors: green, blue

Warm colors: red, orange, brown

Try cool colors for a relaxing environment.

Try warm colors for an exciting environment.

“Interface burden” are things that make it more difficult for your users to get around your cite.  For example, as in the article “Mystery Meat”, these places in a cite that explain what they are until your mouse grazes over them and can make it hard to navigate.  Kind of like using “Easter Eggs” in for informational cites, it’s not appropriate.

A good way to avoid this is to make sure that all hyperlinks are labeled specifically and there are no tricks.  This may make a user loose trust in your business and go elsewhere.

notes for 10/15

Interface: a way of interacting with others.

Transparent medium: something we use without even thinking about it. I.e. a book, we don’t have to think about how we use them, we already know without thinking about it.

3 examples of “interface standards” found in books are:

1)tables of contents

2)index

3)page numbers

3 examples of “interface standards” found on the web:

1)more elaborate headers and footers because of a need for more information in a smaller space.

2) using who, what, when, and where to answer possible questions to fulfill needs of visitors.

3)a creation or revision date

-the home page URL.

-the vertical scroll to move up and down.

-upper tabs to help you get where you want quicker

Some similarities between web pages and books are:

1)they both must give credit and cite original authors

Why we would break conventions about web pages (outside of common conventional use)

1)to be creative amongst your peers.

2)if your directed audience is one that would be looking for something different and unconventional.

example of unconventional website (okaydave.com). Unconventional but smart.  More than one way to navigate.

example of conventional website (aimeehall.com)conventional but plain.

flash: when you scroll over something and it lights up or does something.  Think “flashy”.

What is “interface burden” and how can it be avoided?

Hello!

This is actually the only post I’ve done today, even though the “weekend…yay!” post right below this one also dates on the 7th. I actually wrote that one on Thursday and posted it but I only saved it, so I published it today. Anyways, since I am at a loss for what to write about here, how about the fact that it’s October and it feels like July. I’ve already put up my air conditioner. I can’t really complain, I love summer, I’m just stating that it’s kind of odd. Well, I think I’m done for the evening, so nighty night everybody!

weekend…yay!

Today is Thursday meaning the weekend is right around the corner (well, for me it is since I don’t have class on Fridays). Weekends in my house usually consist of trying to get everything caught up to make Monday a lot easier…oh, and also football. If there’s one common love around my house, it’s football. But even when there’s not a game, there are games on from a long time ago; or there are shows on about football games. So, I hope everyone enjoys their weekend, whatever it is that helps relax your brain.

puddin’ pie

I haven’t done much with a high excitement value today. I’m just sitting here eating some puddin’ pie. I made it less than an hour ago and put it in the freezer to freeze into form, you know, like a pudding pop. The second everyone in the house found out what I was doing, they didn’t really have the patience to wait on it to freeze, so we’re all eating what looks like a pile of chocolate and vanilla pudding mixed with pie crust. It doesn’t really look like pie anymore, but it still tastes AWESOME! Reminds me of cookie dough, even when it’s not done, no matter what form it’s in, it’s the best! This actually sounds like a good thread to start. Tell me a food which looks kind of funny but you think tastes good. I hope everyone gets to answer this, could make for some interesting comments!
